There are many reasons, but usually the number one reason is energy conservation. The following is a partial list of more reasons to insulate.

We use a variety of insulating materials in sizes ranging from 1" - 20". The most common type used is our Mineral Wool Fiber insulation, which is made of inorganic mineral fiber and is used on all types of piping and vessels and is a non-combustible product with a melting point of approximately 2150° F (1177° C), giving it excellent fire resistant properties. Mineral wool is a water repellent yet vapor permeable material.
Calcium Silicate is a granular insulation made of lime and silica, reinforced with organic and inorganic fibers molded into rigid forms. This product is used for insulation up to 1200° F (650° C). It is a high temperature pipe and block insulation with superior durability, resistant to fungi and is non - combustible.
Fiberglass Insulation is made from rotary glass fibers bonded with a thermo-setting resin. It is suitable for installation over hot, cold, concealed and exposed piping systems with operating temperatures up to 850° F (454° C).
Aluminum Jacketing (metal cladding) covers the insulation and is secured with 3/4" stainless steel banding and screws. Aluminum cladding is a protective outer surface for mechanical insulation systems including pipe, vessels, and equipment. It protects the insulation and underlying pipe/vessel from physical damage, UV exposure, corrosive atmospheres, and water.
Tanks/Vessels: There are a couple different ways to insulate tanks and vessels, polyurethane tank panels or Insulating and metal cladding
Removable Insulated Blankets are available for temperatures up to 550° C , make for a neat appearance and are custom designed / custom fitted to ensure a perfect fit which is essential to prevent energy loss. They are designed to fit a variety of flanges, valves, piping, instrumentation, flame arrestor, pigging head covers, well head covers, gate and bonnet covers, ball and check valve covers. Insulating with these removable / reusable blankets reduce heat loss, emissions, and improve safety. Removable blankets also allow access to fittings for maintenance, etc..
Tracer Wrap is an effective way to insulate small piping and used for lines that operate at very high temperatures which often need to be covered. It provides consistent operating temperatures, personnel protection, and can easily be removed for maintenance, periodic inspections and to access unions. Sizes range from 1/2" to 4" in diameter and 4" to 30" wide. Installation requires little effort due to the flexibility of the product. Tracer wrap is made of R-12 quality fiberglass insulation and fully covered by a 6mil UV resistant polyethylene sleeve.
